Haryana’s dominance continued unchallenged on the wrestling mats. At the 35th National Games in Kerala, Haryana bagged a total of 19 medals including 14 gold, 2 Silver and 3 bronze in the 18 categories.
Services trailed Haryana in the medal tally with a total of 12 medals. However Services could only garner 2 gold medals. Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh bagged a gold medal each.
Haryana Wrestlers Bag Five Golds on Day One
Haryana wrestlers made their intentions in wrestling at the national games clear from day one. The Haryana wrestling contingent got their name on five of six gold medals that were up for grabs on the first day in Kerala. 2010 commonwealth games silver medalist Manoj Kumar made short work of his opponents in the 85 kg Greco-Roman Style Wrestling.
The other Gold Medalists on Day One were Jitender (74 Kg. Men’s freestyle), Ravinder Singh (66 Kg. Men’s Greco Roman) Ritu Malik (55 Kg. Women’s freestyle) and Suman Kundu (69 Kg Women’s freestyle).
The last gold on day one was won by Sandeep Tomar (57Kg freestyle) of Services who shocked Amit Kumar of Haryana in the final.
Delhi Battles Haryana On Day Two
Haryana’s supremacy was challenged to some extent on Day two in wrestling at the national games. Delhi’s Jyoti started the day positively for Delhi by beating Nikki in the Freestyle Women’s 75Kg category. Haryana re-asserted its authority later and dismissed all challenges made by Delhi. Shri Bhagwan of Haryana beat Yogesh from Delhi in the Greco-Roman style Men’s 71 Kg category. Sarita beat Kamlesh of Delhi in the Women’s 58Kg freestyle category.
Jharkhand also won a gold on day two. Hardeep beat Mahesh Mohol of Maharashtra in the Greco-Roman style Men’s 98 Kg category.
The last medal of the day was won by Sonu of Haryana in the Freestyle Men’s 86 Kg. weight category.
Services Bag Second Wrestling Gold On Day Three
Overall leaders Services failed to make much of an impact in Wrestling. Naveen and Sandeep Tomar won gold in wrestling for Services. Sandeep Tomar clinched the gold medal in the Greco roman men’s 130 kg Weight category. Naveen was the second services wrestler who grabbed gold. Naveen overcame strong resistance from Haryana’s Sonu in the Greco Roman Men’s 130 kg category.
Haryana bagged four more gold medals on day three and took their gold tally to 13. The team also picked up a silver and bronze on day three of Wrestling at the National Games.
Haryana Finish Up With 17 golds
Out of the 24 golds up for grabs, Haryana won 17. Priyanka (Women’s Freestyle 53 Kg), Anita Sheoran (Women’s Freestyle 63 Kg), Amit Kumar Dhankhar (Men’s Freestyle 70 kg) and Yogesh (Men’s Greco-Roman 80 kg added to the tally on the final day of Wrestling at the national games.
Asian Champion Amit Kumar Dhankhar’s gold medal bout against Arun Kumar of Services SCB was the highlight of the day. Dhankhar prevailed over Arun 6 points to 4 in a thrilling encounter.
Summary- Wrestling At The National Games
It was Haryana’s dominance in Wrestling at the National Games yet again. Hoever, many new faces emerged from other parts of the country. Sushil Kumar himself felt that Kerala were a giant in the making. Praising Keralite Anjumol Joseph’s bronze winning performance, Sushil Kumar had said “Good Times for Kerala in Wrestling are not very far.”
Surely good times are not far away for Indian Wrestling basis the talent on display at the wrestling arena.
