The Gymnastics competition on Day six of the 35th National Games in Kerala saw Dipa Karmakar’s domination. The Tripura girl repeated her 2011 edition show by snatching five gold medals in various individual events. After dominance of Haryana in wrestling and other states in various events, Tripura also got noticed on the standings due to Dipa’s performance.
Dipa Karmakar Steals the Show
Dipa, who recently entered the top 10 in World Gymnastics, ensured a good day at the office for Tripura on Day six. She won Gold in the table vault, uneven parallel bars, floor exercises, balancing beam and individual all-round categories.
She had a combined score of 52.100 points.
Pranti Nayak Rises Above Controversy
Pranti Nayak of Madhya Pradesh bagged the Silver medal with an individual all-round score of 47.600. There was a lot of protest regarding Pranti representing Madhya Pradesh , by the Bengal Olympic association as she had registered and trained in Bengal earlier.
Bengal’s Pranti Das won the over-all individual bronze medal with 43.00 Points.
Apart from the overall silver, Pranti Nayak also won the silver medal in vault category and bronze medal in the floor exercise. Elsewhere, Aruna Reddy of Andhra Pradesh won bronze in the vault category and bagged silver in the floor exercise.
In the Men’s event, Uttar Pradesh’s Aditya Singh Rana won Gold Medal in Parallel bars category. His fellow teammate Ashish Kumar won Silver and Pratip Das of Bengal won the Bronze Medal.
It was a rare good day for Tripura in the National Games as Dipa Karmakar once again proved her worth in the gymnastics circuit. Dipa has the potential to do well in the 2016 Olympics as we have seen courageous displays time and again from the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth gold in Gymnastics.
