Athletics events saw some closely contested affairs on Day 11 of the National Games. Events like 20 km walk, 100 m race and Long jump were under the spotlight on the day.
20 Km Walk
The day started off with the Men’s and Women’s 20 km walk event. In the men’s event, Punjab’s Baljinder Singh snatched the gold with a time of 1:26:24. Chandan Singh of Services won Silver with 1:26:29. The Bronze went to Gurmeet Singh of Uttarakhand.
Sapna of Rajasthan won the gold in Women’s event with a time of 1:40:35. Uttar Pradesh’s Rani Yadav and Priyanka went home with Silver and Bronze respectively.
100 m Race
Haryana’s Dharmbir won Gold in the 100 m Men’s category when he finished the race with a time of 10.46 seconds. The Silver went to Odisha’s Amiya Mallick. Bronze went to Maharashtra’s Krishnakumar Rane.
In the Women’s event, Dutee Chand won Gold with finishing time of 11.76 seconds. Kerala’s Santhini Valakkad came in second with 11.84. Maharashtra’s Rashmi Sheregar was third with 11.87 seconds.
A good day for Kerala unfolded in the long jump event. The state won two gold medals in the event when Neena Varakal and Prajusha Antony recorded jumps of 6.39 m and 6.25 m respectively. Punjab’s Bhumika Thakur had a jump of 6.23m and won bronze.
400m and 1500m
Arokia Rajeev of Services won the 400 m men’s event. The silver went to Haryana’s Lalit Mathur. Rajeev had a time of 46.4 seconds. The bronze went to West Bengal’s Chandan Bauri.
The women’s 400m was won by Anilda Thomas of Kerala. Her team-mate Anu Raghavan won silver and Haryana’s Nirmala won bronze.
As far as the 1500m men’s event was concerned, the gold went to Uttarakhand’s Ravinder Rautela. Kerala’s Sajeesh Joseph and Haryana’s Sandeep won silver and bronze respectively.
The Athletics event came to an end today with Dutee Chand rightfully claiming her place under the sun.In other events today we did not see any clear domination from one state.
