The curtains fell on the 2015 National Games recently. The event was hosted by Kerala from January 31st to February 14th and it was tagged as one of the most well organized events in recent history.
A commendable effort by Kerala
Over the past two weeks, Kerala witnessed some healthy competition in every discipline. Apart from shining as a host, the state had a great outing on the field as well. Kerala wrapped up their campaign by winning an overall total of 162 medals, three ahead of the overall champions, Services.
The major contributions for the state came through athletics. Tintu Luka, OP Jaisha and Renjith Maheshwary were the stand out performers for Kerala in Athletics. Elsewhere, Sajan Prakash had an impressive display in swimming. He won six gold and two silver medals and became the top medal winner in the games.
Third Consecutive championship for Services
When Kerala was busy winning hearts with their efforts, Services won gold medals. They won a total of 91 gold medals to secure their third consecutive overall championship. The canoers and kayakers were the triumph card for Services.
A total of 18 medals came from the two disciplines for Services and ensured their ascension to the top. Shooting, wrestling and weightlifting were the other arenas in which Services shone. They won 15 gold medals from the shooting range thanks to the likes of Jitu Rai and Vijay Kumar.
Other notable performances
Tripura’s Dipa Karmakar dominated the gymnastics competition and went home with five gold medals to her name. It was the only medals that Tripura could manage and Dipa will take a lot of positives from her performances.
The newly former Telangana reigned supreme in badminton. They won a total of nine medals in the sports from which three were gold. On the wrestling mat , it was Haryana all the way. The state got a total haul of 18 gold medals from wrestling.
Haryana’s Rajinder Singh wrote his name into the history books by breaking a National record in Javelin throw. Kerala’s Preeja Sreedharan, who was competing in her last games singed off with a silver medal.
Controversy and Tragedy
Odisha’s Dutee Chand overcame adversity to win the 100m gold medal at the games , thereby making a remarkable comeback.
Services went home with their third consecutive overall championship while Kerala proved to be perfect hosts. The games had its fair share of happiness and sorrow. The fans will now be eagerly looking forward to a the next National Games that will be hosted by Goa.
