One of badminton’s most prestigious tournaments- The Yonex All England Open Badminton tournament is underway and after a few mixed results the day ended well for India with HS Prannoy winning his first round match.
H. S. Prannoy raised his game to keep Indian hopes alive in the Men’s Singles event. World Number 18 H. S. Prannoy recovered strong after losing the first game to French World Number 28 Brice Leverdez in his 16-21, 21-18, 21-18 victory.
The Lin Dan Show
The talk in town since long has been about Lin Dan’s return to the super series event after three years. With Lin Dan, the other man in discussion has been Kidambi Srikanth. Srikanth’s famous win over Dan in the Chinese Super Series in November earned him enough credit in the badminton world to be discussed alongside Lin ‘Super’ Dan.
All Badminton experts were looking forward to the Quarter Finals were Dan and Srikanth would have met. But while Lin Dan struggled his way through to the second round, Kidambi Srikanth was shocked in the first round of the All England Open.
Saina Advances To Second Round
Hoping to win her maiden All England Open Super Series, Saina Nehwal beat Bellaetrix Manuputty of Indonesia. Saina took just 38 minutes to wrap up the first round encounter 21-8, 21-12.
Kidambi Srikanth, Parupalli Kashyap Shocked
On a disastrous day for the Indian men on court, H. S. Prannoy was the only one to progress. The biggest shock of the day came as World Number 14 Kento Momota beat World Number five and fourth seed Kidambi Srikanth 21-18, 12-21, 21-15.
The Japanese Kento Momota showed more resilience on the court and emerged victorious in a gruelling battle that went on for over an hour and six minutes.
Around the same time on another court, Parupalli Kashyap also exited the super series. Chinese World Number 7 Chou Tien Chen beat Kashyap 21-13, 21-12 in just 33 minutes.
Later, Ajay Jayaram, who had earlier impressed in the Qualifiers yesterday, went down fighting against Chinese world number 13 Tian Houwei. Tian Houwei beat Ajay 21-14, 19-21, 21-14.
Good news In Doubles
There was great news for India as both Indian pairs in the doubles events progressed to the second round. The best performance of the day came from Manu Attri and Sumeet Reddy in the men’s doubles. The young pair came back from being a game down to win 9-21, 21-17, 21-17 against seventh seeded Chinese pair of Chai Biao and Hong Wei.
In the women’s doubles, India’s top doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa had to fight hard against Malaysian pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Fie Cho Soong. Jwala and Ashwini won the tie 21-12, 20-22, 21-14.
Round Two Matches Of Indians At All England Open 2015
Only two Indians are now in contention in singles and two pairs in doubles. In the second round to be played on Thursday, Saina Nehwal will take on the winner of the match to be played between Chinese fifth seed Wang Yihan and Japanese shuttler Minatsu Mitani.
In Men’s singles, H. S. Prannoy will face Rajiv Ouseph of England. In Men’s doubles, Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy have another tough tie against Indonesian pair Gideon Markus Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will take on the first seeded Chinese pair Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei in the Women’s Doubles. Jwala and Ashwini will have to put up a masterclass to oust the top seeds and move into the quarter-finals.
