Karun Nair slammed a triple century and KL Rahul scored a big hundred as Karnataka crushed Tamil Nadu by an innings and 217 runs in the Ranji Tophy Final at Mumbai.
The Karnataka bowlers complemented the talented Karnataka batsmen to register their second successive Ranji Trophy victory. This victory by Karnataka is now the largest margin of victory in a Ranji Trophy final.
R Vinay Kumar Rips Through Tamil Nadu Batting Lineup
Having won the toss, Karnataka skipper R Vinay Kumar had no qualms about fielding first. Playing on a bowler’s paradise at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Karnataka bowling attack consisting of Vinay Kumar, HS Sharath, Abhimanyu Mithun and Sreenath Aravind made full use of the conditions.
Apart from the starts made by TN skipper Abhinav Mukund (35) and Baba Indrajith (27), Vinay Kumar and co succeeded in tearing the opposition batting lineup to shreds. A small but solid defiance towards the end by Malolan Rangarajan (11) and A Aswin Crist (21) too was broken as Tamil Nadu folded up for 134 before tea!
Laxmipathy Balaji Rattles Karnataka Top Order
Despite failing miserably with the bat, Abhinav Mukund and his men found solace in a fiery spell from former India star Laxmipathy Balaji. The latter rolled back the years, picking up three wickets to conclude an eventful day 1 with the defending champions at 45/4.
The Karun Nair Show; Rahul And Vinay Kumar Slam Tons
The match still hung in the balance when KL Rahul and Karun Nair walked to the middle on Day 2. However the Karnataka duo stuck in and slowly the psychological advantage transferred from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka.
Rahul and Karun nair were relentless and batted throug Day two to pile on the runs with considerable ease. After the fall of KL Rahul on Day 2, it was time for the Karun Nair show. The Karnataka batsman showcased exemplary class, batsmanship and brilliant temperament as he smashed a massive 328 runs for his team’s cause.
Apart from the world class batting display by Karun Nair, a thought must be spared for Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar who smashed the TN bowling to all parts of the Wankhede to add a neat century (105 runs) . Tail ender Sreenath Aravind played a perfect foil by moving to his half century.
Karnataka were bowled out shortly after lunch on day 4 for a massive 762 on the board and a massive lead of 628.
Vijay Shankar And Dinesh Karthik Tons In Vain
Playing catch up to a massive deficit of 628 is near to impossible for any side, and it certainly would not be any easier for a strong TN side. Following the loss of youngster Baba Aparajith for a well made 68, Vijay Shankar (103) and former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik (120) slammed useful tons to help their side in the mammoth quest of 628. The duo succeeded in adding a useful 115. However, the impressive partnership proved to be in vain as Tamil Nadu were eventually bowled out for 411, still 217 runs short of Karnataka’s score.
The match can be aptly summarized by Vinay Kumar:
It is a big moment for us. I would like to thank all the players, they have worked hard to achieve this milestone. I am very happy with my own performance. Ultimately, winning the Ranji Trophy is important. We won the toss and wanted to play with four seamers. As I said last year, we have a good bunch of players. If we keep performing we will dominate the Indian domestic circuit. Next we will play the Irani Trophy and will try to win that.
