Tweet from Badminton Association of India (BAI) confirming Lin Dan’s debut

Lin Dan last played an individual event in India in 2009

The revered shuttler Lin Dan will play an individual event in the country for the first time since he completed a historic hattrick of the World Championships titles at Hyderabad in 2009. Though the Chinese superstar nicknamed ‘Super Dan’ did come to India during the Thomas Cup last year, he has been playing intermittently on the Tour.

But this year being extremely important for Olympic qualifying, Dan is now focused on playing more and making himself a worthy contender for the biggest titles again.

Chance for a Lin Dan v Kidambi Srikanth final

It will give a great opportunity for the numerous badminton lovers to watch some sizzling matches between Lin Dan and the rising Indian brigade. All eyes will be on a possible final clash between the Chinese and the Swiss Open champion Kidambi Srikanth after the Indian’s thrilling upset of Dan at the China Open back in November.

Apart from the Indian shuttlers, the Chinese is also expected to get some stiff competition from top seed Jan O Jorgensen, fifth seed Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, sixth seed Viktor Axelsen as well as his own compatriot Wang Zhengming.

Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin – top attractions in women’s draw

Meanwhile, the women’s draw is also set for an exciting final as the All England Open finalists Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin are slated to meet each other in the summit clash. It will be interesting to see if Saina is able to turn the tables on Marin at her home tournament.

So mark your calendars for the India Open.
