Saina Nehwal ends Chinese domination at the top

All England Open champion Carolina Marin was expected to be the toughest challenger for Saina Nehwal as the Indian aimed for the numero uno spot. With Marin’s India Open campaign ending on Saturday with a tough 19-21, 23-21, 20-22 loss to World No. 8 Ratchanok Intanon in the semi-finals, Saina was assured of the top ranking.

This also ends over four-year hegemony of the women’s singles top rank by the Chinese. Tine Baun of Denmark was the last non-Chinese to reach the summit when she held the No. 1 spot back in December 2010.

So far, the legendary Prakash Padukone was the only Indian to have ever achieved the coveted top ranking.

This is indeed a Red Letter Day for Indian sports. Saina’s momentous achievement grabbed attention from all over. From the Prime Minister to the President of India to Sachin Tendulkar to Shah Rukh Khan – none was left to congratulate the 25-year-old. Even Brian Lara joined in!
