One of the most well balanced teams to have ever played the IPL – Chennai Super Kings. With the dynamic Mahendra Singh Dhoni leading the pack for the eighth consecutive season, CSK have all reasons to aim for the silverware again. The Boys in Yellow have already tasted glory in 2010 and 2011 and came close on a couple of occasions. In 2014, they were eliminated by a superior Kings XI Punjab in the Eliminator. But, come IPL 2015, and Dhoni’s boys shall be up and running again!
Captain Cool and his explosive batsmen
As many an analyst would agree, a team with MS Dhoni always has the ‘X Factor’ entrenched in it. And in the last seven editions of the IPL, CSK’s performance has proved just that! The team has remained strong ever since the IPL was born in 2008, and much of the credit goes to the pool of explosive ‘T20 minded’ batsmen.
Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith at the top, Suresh Raina at No 3, and Faf du Plessis at No 4 – that’s what the Chennai Super Kings top order looks like! Needless to say, each of the top 4 can change a T20 game around within minutes! These power hitters are followed by the wily Dwayne Bravo and captain MS Dhoni. Ravindra Jadeja’s utility at No 7 is well established. Add to that the likelihood of seeing Irfan Pathan as a floater, and you know Chennai Super Kings mean business as usual!
Spinners and all rounders in plenty, Mohit Sharma the lead pacer
India’s World Cup hero Mohit Sharma shall lead the charge of CSK’s pace bowling department. Mohit has been phenomenal in the last two editions of the IPL, and it was his brilliant show in 2013 that earned him a ticket to the national team. Young South African speedster Kyle Abbot’s addition to the team has improved the bowling unit’s prospects by leaps and bounds. Veteran Indian pacer Ashish Nehra and emerging Kiwi sensation Matt Henry add to the fast bowling options for the team to choose from.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja hunt in pairs with their spin bowling – be it in blue jersey or the yellow one! Ashwin is a tough customer to negotiate on Indian tracks. Jadeja, too, has his bagful of tricks to trouble batsmen in the middle overs. Samuel Badree had stolen the show in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh last year. It remains to be seen whether he can repeat his heroics on similar tracks in India this year. Dwayne Bravo has flummoxed batsmen with his slower balls all around the world. And one can expect him to do the same in IPL too!
