Mumbai cueist Dhruv Sitwala produced a big surprise in the Asian Billiards Championship held at Beijing when he won the title by upsetting Pankaj Advani.
First taste of International success
The Asian Billiards Championship title is the first International crown of Sitwala’s career and he had some tough competition to win the tournament. Three World Champions, namely, Pankaj Advani, C Praprut and Peter Gilchrist were all in the running for the title, but Sitwala proved to be the last man standing.
He was up against Advani in the final and came out winner with a score of 6 – 3 in the best of 11 frames match. Sitwala opened the match with a 3-0 lead but was met with some heavy resistance from Advani who came back and reduced the lead to 5 – 3. With one frame needed to wrap up the tournament, Sitwala stepped up his game and produced a 101 unfinished break.
Two months back, Advani had defeated Sitwala 5-1 in the National Billiards Championship and it was a sweet revenge for the New Asian Billiards Champion. Sitwala also defeated C Praprut on his way to the crown, earning him the tag of being a giant killer.
“I am on top of the world. The feeling though is yet to sink in. I had lost to Advani in the national billiards final and the memory was haunting me before the title clash,” Sitwala said after the win.
Apart from Advani and Sitwala, Indian Cueist Sourav Kothari also had a good outing in the championship. Kothari, who was the defending champion at the tournament, settled for a bronze. Whereas one of the favorites, Peter Gilchrist could only reach the quarter finals of the tournament where he was knocked out by Kothari.
