Chennai Super Kings defeated Kings XI Punjab in the 2015 IPL on Saturday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium by a margin of 97 runs.
The right decision
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bat and the decision to do the same was justified by a solid batting performance.
Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum, who opened the innings for Chennai, started off the innings with a quick fire 50 from 4.4 overs. Smith (26 from 13 balls) was later sent back to the pavilion but it was still a solid start from Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men.
After the departure of Smith, McCullum continued the fireworks along with Suresh Raina. The duo set up a 66 run partnership in the second wicket and McCullum went on to score a half century as well (66 from 44 balls)
McCullum soon was taken away from the picture, but his innings proved to be crucial for the foundation. Aided by some sloppy fielding by the Punjab team, Chennai scored 116 for two after just 12 overs when McCullum was sent back.
Dhoni pushed himself up the order and ensured that his team had a good total with some big blows. Dhoni finished the match with 41 runs of 27 balls while Chennai’s Innings came to an end at 192 for 3.
Needing a strong win, Punjab sent out Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay into the middle. Sehwag (1 from 2 balls) however was soon sent back in the fifth ball of the first over when Du Plessis caught him off Ishwar Pandey’s bowling.
The batsmen that followed tried to control the situation but could not do the same due to some excellent bowling from Chennai. Punjab’s heavyweight batsmen, Shaun Marsh (10 from 10) and George Bailey (1 from 3) were dismissed cheaply and hence Punjab ended up in a precarious position of 40/3 after six overs.
The Wickets of David Miller (3 from 9) and Murali Vijay (34 from 32) fell in quick succession and the writing was on the wall. With both the wickets and a climbing run rate not working for them, Punjab struggled to make a match of it. Ravindra Jadeja, Mohit Sharma and Ashish Nehra tore through the tail end and restricted Punjab to 95 for 9 after 20 overs.
Jadeja ended the match with figures of 3 for 22 from 4 overs while Nehra produced yet another magical spell by snatching 2 wickets for just 16 runs in his four overs. Brendon McCullum received the Man of the Match award for his batting effort.
With the win, Chennai Super Kings have overtaken Rajasthan Royals as the league topers of 2015 IPL. Chennai now have 10 points from 6 matches while Rajasthan have 10 points from 7 matches and an inferior Net Run Rate.
