Another good day unfolded for India at the World Table Tennis Championships at Suzhou in China as G Sathiyan managed to qualify for the men’s singles main draw.
The Indian players have been performing well in the World TT Championships so far. Sathiyan ensured his place in the main draw by defeating Felipe Olivares of Chile in the last qualifying round. The scoreboard read 11-7 11-8 11-8 11-4 in favor of the Indian. Ranked 188 in the world, Sathiyan will now face off against World Number 64, Gerell Par in the first round of the main draw.
Elsewhere, Sanil Shetty of India was knocked out in the last qualifying round by Elia Schmid of Switzerland. Sanil was heading for a win from the start itself, but could not take advantage of the opportunity he had at his hands. The final score read 12-10 13-15 11-9 6-11 11-7 13-15 9-11.
Apart from Sathiyan, Sharath Kamal will also be in action in the main draw. Kamal will face Park Sin Hyok of North Korea and is the early favorite to win the match.
As far as the women’s category is concerned, all of the Indian players will be pitted against higher-ranked oppositions. Mouma Das will face Mikhailova Polina of Russia in the first round while K Shamini will face Ruta Paskaukiene of Lithuania.
Manika Batra is the other Indian woman in contention and she will face Japan’s Hirano Miu. The likes of Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan, Soumyajit Ghosh and Sanil Shetty will feature in the doubles event as well.
