Indian Achanta Sharath Kamal has made it to the third round of the Men’s singles competition in World Table Tennis Championship held at Suzhou, China.
Kamal, ranked 44 in the world defeated Simon Gauzy of France in the second round of the tournament by a score line of 11-4, 11-5, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8. Gauzy is ranked 35th in the world and the win over a higher ranked opponent is sure to boost the confidence of Kamal in the upcoming rounds. By reaching the third round, Kamal has matched his best performance in the World TT Championships.
He will now face the winner of G Sathiyan – Fang Bo match in the third round of the tournament. Sathiyan had earlier defeated Gerell Par in the first round of the tournament and will be looking to upset Fang. The first round victory of Kamal on the other hand came against Pak Sin Hyok of South Korea.
Disappointment for the women
Indian hopes of victory in the Women’s category took a big blow as Mouma Das and K. Shamini were knocked out of the tournament in the first round itself. Mouma lost out to P. Mikhailova of Russia 11-6, 7-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-6 in a hard fought battle while Shamini bowed down to R. Paskauskiene of Lithuania for a score line of 2-11, 5-11, 4-11, 9-11.
In the men’s doubles, the team of Sathiyan and Kamal was knocked out by M. Morizono and Oshima Yuya 4-11, 11-9, 6-11, 4-11, 5-11 in the first round. Soumyajit Ghosh and Sanil Shetty also exited in the first round after they failed to overcome the pairing of H. Chiang and S. Huang.
The women’s doubles saw Mouma and Shamini crash out in the first round after a 11-7, 6-11, 1-11, 8-11, 7-11 loss against N. Komwong and Li Xia Don.
