The Indian team started their campaign on a winning note at the 18th Asian Individual Squash Championship 2015 held in International Squash Complex, Kuwait, on Friday. All three Indians in action on Day One – Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Harinder Pal Sandhu won their respective matches and progressed to the third round.
Easy victory for Saurav Ghosal
Asian Games gold medallist Saurav Ghosal, who has accounted for two top 10 wins recently, continued his confident display. The world no. 21, who has been seeded second at the Asian Individual Squash Championship, got a bye in the first round.
In the second round on Friday, he posted a convincing 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 victory over Abdulrahman Al Malki of Qatar to move into the Round of 16.
Mangaonkar and Sandhu victorious
Sixth-seeded Mahesh Mangaonkar, who also received a bye in the opener, came through his second round encounter against Park Jong Myoung of Korea. The world no. 46 won his match 11-7, 11-13, 11-7, 11-1.
Eighth seed and reigning National Champion Harinder Pal Sandhu was the third Indian to make it through to the pre-quarter-finals. Sandhu won when his opponent – local lad Falah Muhammad retired in the third game. The final score was 11-5, 11-9, 6-0 in favour of the Indian.
Pallikal, Chinappa begin title quest on Saturday
Second seed Dipika Pallikal and fourth seed Joshna Chinappa begin their title quest at this biennial Asian squash event on Saturday. While Pallikal faces ninth seed Vanessa Raj, Chinappa will take on the winner of Li Dong Jin v Park Eun-Ok.
