Mumbai Indians secured yet another victory in the 2015 IPL after coming on top against Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. Strong outings from Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel with the bat helped Mumbai put up target of 173 on the board and this was then defended brilliantly by the bowlers.
Mumbai Indians Start on the Right foot
Mumbai Indians decided to bat first after winning the toss and made their intentions clear in the initial overs itself. Parthiv Patel and Lendl Simmons, who opened the innings for Mumbai Indians, were hitting the Kings XI Punjab bowlers all over the field and took the team to hundred in just under twelve overs.
Karanveer Singh then found the break for Punjab when he dismissed Patel for 59 (36). Skipper Rohit Sharma came into the middle next and provided some great support for Simmons. Simmons smashed nine fours and a six in his innings to score 71 (56) before being dismissed by Anureet Singh.
The trio of Keiron Pollard, Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu made small but effective contributions towards the end of the innings and helped Mumbai reach a solid score of 172 after 20 overs.
Sehwag, Maxwell Disappoint again
Kings XI Punjab was desperate to see their openers deliver in the first few overs but things did not go as they planned. Virender Sehwag went back to the dressing room in the second over and he was soon followed by Glenn Maxwell in the fifth.
Murali Vijay, who opened the innings alongside Sehwag, showed some composure and scored 39(34). His wicket however fell thanks to Harbhajan Singh and Kings XI Punjab looked up to David Miller and George Bailey to save the match.
Miller did have a good individual performance in the match with 43 runs from 37 balls but on the whole, his contribution went in vain. The wickets of Bailey, Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Sahan fell in quick succession and Punjab was restricted to 149/7 from the 20 overs. The Man of the Match award went to Lendl Simmons for his heroics with the bat.
