Army’s Jaiveer Singh qualified for the 2015 Wuhan Asian Championships in the 3000 metres steeplechase with a time of 8:48.56 at the 19th Federation Cup. It was a good result on an otherwise average day where many Indian athletes could not meet the qualification norms for the Asian Meet on a wet day.
Narrow Margin of Victory for Jaiveer
Jaiveer finished first, with fellow army-man, Naveen Kumar coming second with a time of 8:49.38 and Sachin Bajirao Patil of Maharashtra came third with a time of 8:58.13. Though the race was completed in good time by Jaiveer (8:48), it was not near his personal best of 8:36.36. Naveen’s best timing of 8:40.39 had netted him a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games, held at Incheon but the conditions here did not help the Indians as much.
In the women’s category, Pariti Lamba of Haryana took first place clocking in at 10:48.86. Nandini Gupta of Uttar Pradesh and S. Padmavathy from Tamil Nadu came second and third, clocking at 10:58.76 and 11:30.50 respectively.
The last day of the Federation Cup, on Monday, is expected to produce some brilliant showing from the Indian athletes as the perfect curtain finale.
