After scooping up a couple of bronze medals at the Changwon Rifle/Pistol World Cup, Indian shooters continued with their confident display. Beijing Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, London Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang along with Chain Singh and Apurvi Chandela pocketed five medals – three gold and two bronze – at the recently-concluded International Shooting Competition of Hannover in Germany.
The tournament held at the National Shooting Center in Hannover was a key warm-up event ahead of the season’s second World Cup. More than 1000 shooters were vying for medals.
Double gold for Abhinav Bindra and Chain Singh
Veteran Abhinav Bindra clinched both the individual as well as the team gold in the 10m air rifle event. Partnering him in the team event were Gagan Narang and Asian Games bronze medallist Chain Singh.
Chain Singh added another gold medal in 50m men’s rifle prone.
Gagan Narang, meanwhile, came up with a bronze-winning performance in men’s 50m rifle 3 positions. Apart from them, Apurvi Chandela who recently secured a Rio Olympic quota place, continued her rich vein of form by taking the bronze in women’s air rifle event.
World Cup next week
This gold medal winning performance in Germany surely hold Indian shooters in good stead ahead of the Rifle/Pistol World Cup in Fort Benning, USA scheduled from 11th-19th May. The prestigious tournament presents Indian rifle and pistol shooters a great opportunity to claim as many quota places as possible for next year’s Olympics.
