Asian Games bronze medallist Vennam Jyothi Surekha was the best-placed Indian as the Archery World Cup 2015 – Stage 1 began in Shanghai on Wednesday. Surekha, who had a great outing at the Asia Cup Stage II in March, qualified in 6th place in Women’s Compound category. Asian Games gold medallist Abhishek Verma too did very well in the ranking round as he qualified in 8th place in the men’s compound category.
In men’s recurve archery, veteran Jayanta Talukdar was ranked 9th at the end of the qualification rounds. Former World No. 1 Deepika Kumari was the best performer in women’s recurve category as she secured a 13th place in qualification.
Amongst the teams, the men’s compound team has been placed 9th while the women’s compound team captured a 5th place. Indian recurve archers had contrasting fate during the qualifying rounds. While the men’s team clinched the 5th place, the women’s team was ranked a lowly 18th at the end of the day.
