After an impressive showing in the pool matches, India’s Geeta Phogat went on to win the Bronze medal in the 58kg category of the Asian Wrestling Championship held in Doha.
Victory by fall for Geeta Phogat
The Indian, who had earlier lost out to Kaori Icho of Japan in the pool ¼ final came back strong in her bronze medal play off against Thi Loan Nguyen of Vietnam. Geeta managed to earn 5 classification points in the match and also came out with four technical points. Her opponent could not get off the mark and Geeta Phogat went on to win convincingly.
Icho, who was the only wrestler in the category who defeated Geeta, went on to win the gold by defeating Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan’s Aiym Abdildina also won bronze alongside Geeta.
Hitender almost gets a bronze
Elsewhere, India’s Hitender Beniwal made it to the bronze medal playoffs of the Men’s 125kg category but bowed down to Farkhod Anakulov of Tajikistan in the match. Hitender could only manage 2 technical points in the bout whereas his opponent had two technical and five classification points.
Kyrgyzstan’s Aiaal Lazarev who defeated Hitender in the ¼ final ended up winning the gold medal in the category.
