Another great day for India unfolded at the Asian Wrestling Championship as Narsingh Pancham Yadav snatched bronze in the Men’s 74kg category.
Third Medal for India in Asian Wrestling Championship
Narsingh’s bronze in the Men’s 74kg category is the third medal for India in the Asian Wrestling Championship, after Geeta Phogat’s bronze and Vinesh Phogat’s silver.
Narsingh started off his campaign on a losing note as Japan’s Daisuke Shimada defeated him in the qualification. Daisuke managed to score 12 technical points and three classification points while Narsingh could only manage nine technical and one classification points.
The Indian however came back strong in the repêchage bout against Korea’s Byungmin Kong to record a dominant win. He scored a whopping 15 technical points in the bout and booked his place for the bronze medal play off.
Kazakhstan’s Zhiger Zakirov Narsingh’s opponent in the playoff and after a tight match, which saw both wrestlers get eight technical points, the Indian edged out his opponent with a 3-1 score in classification points.
Iran’s Peyman Morteza Yarahmadi won gold in the category, while the silver went to Daisuke Shimada of Japan. Narsingh was the replacement for Sushil Kumar in the tournament and exceeded expectations with the medal.
Elsewhere, Parveen Rana of India missed out on a bronze medal after losing out to Takafumi Kojima of Japan in a 70 kg category bronze medal playoff match.
