The Indian Badminton team looks poised to deliver yet another strong performance at the International circuit as they gear up for the Sudirman Cup starting this Sunday.
The biennial tournament starts today and the Indian team will play their first match on Monday. This year’s team boasts of a string contingent consisting of Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, Jwala Gutta, P Kashyap and Ashwini Ponnappa.
The Indian badminton team will be looking to better the nation’s best performance of finishing fifth in the prestigious tournament. Here is a look at some of the memorable performance by Indian Badminton Team in the past.
#1 Commonwealth Games (2006)
2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne saw some excellent performance from the Indian Mixed Badminton team as they came home with the bronze medal. Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta and Aparna Popat were part of the team back then and will be seen in this year’s Sudirman Cup as well.
#2 Commonwealth Games (2010)
Four years after the Melbourne Games, the Indian Mixed team once again stood out. This time, the team won a silver medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi.
#3 World Championships (2011)
The pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will have a lot of expectations resting on their shoulders this year and rightfully so. They were the bronze medalists in the women’s double category at the World Championships back in 2011.
