IPL Semifinal Scenarios: Who Will Be In The Final Four?

Chennai Super Kings’ dramatic win over Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, powered them to the top-spot on the IPL 2015 points table. The win also ensures that CSK get through to the playoffs. They play bottom-ranked teams Delhi and Punjab in their remaining fixtures and Dhoni’s men will be clear leaders at the top if they win both games.

Superior as the Super Kings’ performance was, there were however hiccups from some of the other teams that have thrown open scenarios for the qualification to the playoffs of the IPL 2015.Here is our look at the IPL Semifinal scenarios.

Chennai Super Kings won their 11th match against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday

IPL Semifinal Scenarios:

#2 Kolkata Knight Riders

After their tight win against Kings XI Punjab, the Knight Riders raced away to the top of the table, before Super Kings took over the spot. Wins in their last two fixtures (against Mumbai and Rajasthan) will see them finish at 19 points and seal a playoff berth.Even one win should see the team through to the playoffs.

#3 Rajasthan Royals

At the start of the IPL, the Royals were the team who were placed at the top of the points table. However, with just one game left to go, they are struggling to find a foothold to retain their place in the top-four. The Royals have played the most number of matches (13) as compared to all other teams. As such, they only have one game left against the Knight Riders that they need to win in order to ensure they qualify. If they fail to do so, they must hope that the Sunrisers Hyderabad lose 2 out of their 3 remaining fixtures and Mumbai lose at least a game. This will keep all the teams tied on 14 points and Rajasthan will likely advance to the playoffs with a better run rate.

#4 Royal Challengers Bangalore

Having played 11 games, the Royal Challengers are currently placed fourth in the points table with 13 points. With three games – against Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Daredevils to go, they have a good chance to finish third. Or even second, if they win all their remaining matches. They will be placed above the Knight Riders owing to a better net run rate in case the two teams are tied on points.

#5 Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sunrisers play their 12th match today against Kings XI Punjab. Their next two matches are against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Currently placed fifth with 12 points, Sunrisers need to win at least two of their three remaining matches to solidify their bid to qualify for the playoffs.

#6 Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians lost their 12th match to Royal Challengers on Sunday in an emphatic manner. The loss also dented their chances of trying to make it to the playoffs. With matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, the men in blue will have to win both their games to ensure a strong hold of the 4th spot.

Teams out of Qualifying Race:

The last two teams – Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab – placed seventh and eighth respectively have no chances of qualifying and it has been a dismal run for both squads. Punjab especially has been the biggest surprise considering that it had reached the final of previous year’s IPL edition.

Predictions for top four teams in IPL 2015:

Here is how the IPL 2015 points table may look after the completion of all the league matches. Chennai Super Kings are expected to top the table and Bangalore and Kolkata are likely to follow the leaders. It will be a three-way battle between Rajasthan, Mumbai and Hyderabad for the fourth spot and the Rajasthan Royals are likely to be replaced by the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Rank Teams Matches Won Lost NR Points
1 Chennai Super Kings 14 10 4 0 20
2 Royal Challengers Bangalore 14 9 4 1 19*
3 Kolkata Knight Riders 14 9 4 1 19

7 Delhi Daredevils 14 4 10 0 8

*Note: RCB will finish 2nd due to a better net run rate if they are tied with KKR at 19 points.
