Three days after being crowned the Madrid Masters champions, Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea have made a winning start to their campaign at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Foro Italico, Rome. The Indo-Romanian pair defeated the Argentine duo of Leonardo Mayer and Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-4 to move into the second round of the last big claycourt warm-up event ahead of the French Open.
Sixth consecutive win for Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea
Rohan Bopanna and Romanian Florin Mergea who joined forces after the Miami Open, are on a roll. Besides claiming the Madrid Open title last Sunday, they also made it to the final of the ATP Casablanca tournament and are now on a six-match winning streak.
Bopanna and Mergea were thoroughly dominant throughout the match, breaking their opponents thrice. With impeccable serving that saw them win 87% of the first serve points, they wrapped up the match in 63 minutes.
Bopanna, Mirza, Paes in action on Thursday
It will be a packed day in Rome on Thursday with Rohan Bopanna, Sania Mirza as well as Leander Paes all in action at the Foro Italico. While Bopanna will lock horns with third seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, sixth seeds Leander Paes and Daniel Nestor will square off against David Marrero and Pablo Cuevas. If Paes and Bopanna both win, they will meet each other in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile in women’s doubles, the top-seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis will challenge the German-Spanish combine of Julia Georges and Silvia-Soler Espinosa for a place in the semi finals.
