SET Thailand Open: Junior Cadet Girl Paddlers Impress

Indian junior paddlers had a mixed bag of a day at the SET Thailand Open, on Thursday. The Indian junior girls’ team met with some success as they reached the semi-finals of the tournament, after being placed second in their group. Likewise, the junior girls’ cadet team also reached the semi-finals of the tournament.

Junior Girls’ Qualify for Semi-finals

In the group stage, the junior girls’ team faced-off first against Thailand A, who beat our team comprehensively 3-0. Sreeja Akula lost her match to Orawan Paranang 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 9-11; Shruti Amrute lost to Tamolwan Khithera 4-11, 9-11, 7-11 and Maria Rony was defeated by Cathareeya Pougsri 8-11, 8-11 and 9-11.

In the second group match against Thailand C, the girls won comfortably, 3-1. Akula defeated M. Phacharapon 11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8; Rony defeated Thitisuda Premsiri 12-10, 11-9, 11-1 and Amrute defeated M. Phacharapon 11-8, 11-8, 11-9. The team lost its only match, when Amrute was defeated by Mahawichian 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 5-11, 4-11.

In the semi-finals, the Indian juniors’ team faced Chinese Taipei, who dominated and won all three of their matches. Lin Po Jusan defeated Akula 12-10, 11-8, 11-5; Hsuan Chia Lin defeated Amrute 11-6, 11-3, 11-6 and Wen Ruei Ling defeated Maria Rony 11-5, 13-11, 11-8.

Junior Cadets put up an Impressive Show

The Indian team moved into the semi-finals of the junior cadet girls’ category, after defeating Thailand B, 3-1, in a seemingly one-sided tie. Archana Kamat defeated Jinnipa Savetbut 11-4, 11-9, 11-9; Srusthi Halengadi defeated Naja Mekamporu 11-4, 11-8, 13-11 and Archana also went on to defeat Monapsom Saritapirak 11-9, 11-8, 11-9. Thailand B’s only victory came through Saritapirak, who defeated Varuni Jaiswal 11-4, 6-11, 5-11, 10-12.

Consolation Triumph for Junior Boys

The junior boys’ team in the event meanwhile, reached the final of the consolation event after defeating the Malaysian boys’ team, 3-0. Utkarsh Gupta won against Lam Chee Yin 11-8, 11-6, 11-7; Lalrin Puia came through against Ong Cheong Sze 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 and Sanish Ambedkar defeated Sarthak Seth 11-4, 11-3, 11-7.
