Ace discus thrower Vikas Gowda continued his fine start to the season by clinching the bronze medal at the Shanghai leg of the prestigious Diamond League on Sunday. Gowda threw the discus to a distance of 63.90m which placed him in the third position.
Vikas Gowda achieves his best throw in 5th attempt
The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold and Asian Games silver medallist began with a foul. His second attempt saw him hurl the discus to a distance of 61.70m which put him in the 5th spot out of 10 throwers. His subsequent throws of 59.28m and 60.96m saw him drop down to the seventh position.
However, Gowda came up with the best throw of 63.90m in his 5th attempt that enabled him to jump four spots to be third. The result fetched him one Diamond League point and also $4000.
2013 World Championships silver medallist Piotr Malachowski of Poland pocketed the gold with a throw of 64.65m while his compatriot Robert Urbanek got the silver with 64.47m.
Fine run for Vikas Gowda
Earlier, Vikas Gowda achieved his season’s best of 65.75m at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, San Diego. He had also confirmed a berth for August’s World Championships at the US Olympic Training Centre in San Diego where he hurled the discus to 65.25m.
He is however yet to qualify for next year’s Rio Olympics as the criterion is 66m.
