International Boxing Tournament in Doha: India Does Well

It is not often that the Indian boxing contingent displays its authority away from home, but the boxers have exceeded expectations in the ongoing Doha International Boxing Tournament, which started on the 19th of this month.

At the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Multipurpose Sports Hall in Doha, India’s brightest hope for a medal in next year’s Olympics in Rio, L Devendro Singh notched up yet another impressive performance, and advanced to the final in the Light Flyweight division. Devendro also had a bit of luck on his side, as he received a bye in the first round, and received a walkover in the semi finals, with his scheduled opponent, Al Rafeek Yahea from Qatar being declared medically unfit to fight.

Indian boxers prove their dominance

With Devendro carrying the hopes and expectations of winning gold in the finals, the other boxers too had a fantastic run in the tournament, instilling confidence among the Indian fans for the upcoming World Championships, in October, later this year.

Former Asian gold medalist, Shiva Thapa outclassed his quarterfinal opponent, Al Wadi Mohammad from Jordan 3 – 0, and in the process advanced to the semi finals in the Bantamweight division. Meanwhile, Mandeep Jangra, who also won silver in Commonwealth Games 2014 outboxed his opponent from Afghanistan, Allahdad Rahemi to reach the semifinals of the tournament in the Welterweight division.

Manoj Kumar defeated Morocco’s Younes Baati in the Light Welterweight category to book his place in the last four, while Gaurav Bhiduri (Flyweight) and Vikas Krishan (Middleweight) too won their respective fights to reach the semifinals in their respective weight classes.

This guarantees seven medals for the Indian boxing contingent in the tournament. The ongoing International Boxing Tournament features athletes from 12 countries, and serves as a test event for the World Championships to be held later this year which, is an Olympic qualifying event. With the incredible showing of the Indian boxers in Doha, the Indian fans can expect a decent showing by the boxers in the forthcoming World Championships as well.
