Pune FC had enough defenses in them to survive a full-fledged Shillong Lajong and came out winning 1 – 0 in the I League game at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. The two teams locked up in the penultimate round of the League and an early goal from Zohmingliana Ralte was enough to seal a victory for Pune FC.
Early Advantage for Pune FC
Pune came into the after a memorable win against East Bengal last week and were on the front foot early into the match. The team went ahead in the sixth minute of the game thanks to a goal from Zohmingliana Ralte. Ralte headed in a corner from Arata Izumi to make sure that Pune went ahead.
Shillong reacted well to the goal and began piling up the pressure on Pune. They made their intentions clear once again by taking off Zodingliana and bringing in Durga Boro. The latter almost made an immediate impact when he drove a wicked ball into the box only for Cornell Glen to blast it over.
Pune Keeper Amrinder was kept busy throughout the rest of the first half as he was producing save after save.
Luck running out for Shillong Lajong
Salgaocar going 2-0 up against Bharat FC proved to be bad news for Shillong. The team desperately needed a win to stay up in the I-League. The team came attacking with all guns blazing in the second half as well.
Glen was proving to be a major threat for Pune FC in the early stages of Second half but he was contained well by Ralte. Pune FC failed to find a break from all the heavy attack they were under.
Glen almost equalized for Shillong in the 62nd minute but saw his free kick hit the crossbar. The agonizingly close effort somewhat showed the story of the day for Shillong.
Later, Haokip showed up in the Shillong box against the flow of play but unfortunately for him, he was judged offside by the referee. The ending moments of the match saw Pune on the attacking side. The combination of Arata and Ishfaq was causing a lot of problems for Shillong. Both Arata and Ishfaq almost scored goals deep into the last ten minutes.
Pune FC fans experienced a big heartbreak in the 90th minute when Glen managed to get the ball in the net but once again, lady luck smiled at Pune as he was ruled offside.
The final whistle came after the added on three minutes and with the win, Pune FC has now edged a step closer to the third position. Shillong on the other hand will have a tough time staying up in the league after this loss.
