Doha International Boxing Tournament: India Runs Riot

The Indian contingent passed with flying colors at the International Boxing Tournament held in Doha, Qatar, which served as a test event for the upcoming World Championships later this year.

With Devendro Singh advancing into the finals and India guaranteed of 7 medals heading into the final day of the tournament, a lot was expected from the Indian boxers, who did not disappoint the fans. The Indian boxers notched up an impressive 4 gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals in the tournament.

Indian boxers dominate in various weight classes

Devendro, who received a walk through in the semi finals, faced Aldren Moreno of Philippines in the finals of the Light Flyweight division. Devendro outboxed Aldren and won the bout 3:0, thus winning the gold in his weight category.

Elsewhere, Gaurav Bidhuri faced Montassar Bouali in the Flyweight division, and defeated the Tunisian by 2:1, bringing home the silver medal.

Former Asian gold medalist, Shiva Thapa got the better of his opponent, HYM Abdelaal in the finals of the Bantamweight division, and easily defeated the Egyptian by 2:1 to win yet another gold medal.

The Indian boxers weren’t finished yet, as Manish Kaushik brought more good news, as he defeated Rabi Hamza from Morocco by 3:0, winning the gold medal in the Lightweight division, while Manoj Kumar outboxed his opponent from Philippines, Magliquian Nicole by 3:0 in the Light Welterweight category, bagging yet another gold medal.

Mandeep Jangra (Welterweight) and Vikas Krishan (Middleweight) had to settle for the bronze medals in their respective weight classes, as the Indian contingent wrapped up the Doha International Boxing tournament with an impressive tally of 7 medals, making their intentions clear for the upcoming World Championships.

A good sign leading up to the World Championships

After an emphatic performance at the International Boxing Tournament, the fans can now expect a great showing from the Indian contingent at the upcoming World Championships, with the possibility of qualifying for next year’s Olympics luring the boxers from the subcontinent.
