It was not a happy return to the French Open for Indian ace Mahesh Bhupathi as he lost his first round in men’s doubles in Paris on Tuesday. Bhupathi, who had teamed up with rising star Nick Kyrgios, went down 3-6, 1-6 to the French-Australian combination of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Lucas Pouille.
Bhupathi/Kyrgios fail to capitalise on break points
The former two-time French Open men’s doubles champion Mahesh Bhupathi came to Roland Garros after opting out last year due to injuries. In 2012 and 2013, he had succumbed to a first round defeat at the claycourt Slam.
Unfortunately, the comeback did not prove successful for the Indian who has now fallen to 828 in the doubles world rankings.
Bhupathi and Kyrgios had six break points in the first set but failed to convert any one of those. The young pair of Kokkinakis and Pouille capitalised on their first break opportunity and clinched the first set 6-3.
The second set was a one-way traffic as the Indian-Australian duo was broken in the very first game. Kokkinakis and Pouille broke twice more to complete a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Mahesh Bhupathi was the only Indian in action on Day 3 of the 2015 French Open.
