Day 6 of the French Open turned out to be a bright day for Indian tennis fans as all the Indians in action progressed to the third round of their respective events. In women’s doubles, top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis thrashed French pair of Stephanie Foretz and Amandine Hesse 6-3, 6-4.
The top seeds will lock horns with the Italian team of Roberta Vinci and Karin Knapp for a place in the quarter-finals.
Leander, Bopanna enter French Open third round
In men’s doubles, tenth seeds Leander Paes and Daniel Nestor won 7-6, 6-2 over Andre Begemann and Julian Knowle while ninth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea beat Donald Young and Austin Krajicek 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In the third round, Nestor and Paes will be up against the Australian Open champions Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli. Madrid Masters champions Bopanna and Mergea too have a tough job at hand as they face the fifth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.
Leander: The only Indian remaining in mixed doubles
In mixed doubles, Leander Paes is the only Indian remaining as both Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna crashed out with their respective partners in the first round. Paes, who has teamed up with Martina Hingis, will play against the Slovenian-Romanian duo of Katarina Srebotnik and Horia Tecau in the second round.
