Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza is one step away from her maiden U.S. Open title as she moved into the mixed doubles finals on Wednesday. Sania along with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares defeated a fighting Yung Jan Chan of Taipei and Ross Hutchins of Great Britain 7-5 4-6 10-7 in the semi-finals.
Top seeded Sania and her partner Soares took the first set 7-5. The unseeded opponents came back strongly to win the second set 6-4. The last set was the closest of all. Both the teams had break points against each other on four occasions.Overall Sania and Soares scored 74 points while Chan and Hutchins were only 3 points behind with 71 points. The match lasted an hour and 33 minutes.
In the finals, they will face unseeded opponents Abigail Spears from the USA and Santiago Gonzalez from Mexico, who have been impressive throughout the tournament. This will be Sania’s fifth appearance in a mixed doubles final at the Grand Slam level. She has won the 2009 Australian open and the 2012 French open with fellow Indian teammate Mahesh Bhupathi.
Sania plays her other semi-final (women’s doubles) with Cara Black against Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta on Thursday at 11:30 p.m. IST.
