Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap made it to the quarter-finals of Indonesian Open, after both the players won their respective second round encounters.
Comfortable Win for Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal, who lost her world number one ranking after losing out early in the Australian Open, battled Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching in the second round. The Indian took home the first set comfortably with a score of 21-13. The unseeded Ching struggled in the second set as well. Saina soon wrapped up the second game to ensure her place in the quarter finals. The final score read 21-13, 21-15.
Parupalli Kashyap caused a big upset in the tournament when he defeated world no. 5 Son Wan Ho of South Korea. Kashyap took the game in straight sets with a score of 21-11, 21-1 in just 36 minutes. He dominated throughout the two games and saw only minor resistance from his opponent. Kashyap will now face top seeded Chen Long in the quarter final of the tournament.
Bad News Elsewhere
While Kashyap progressed, Kidambi Srikanth and the doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa crashed out of the tournament. Srikanth lost 21-14 20-22 13-21 against Ginting Anthony of Indonesia. Ranked fourth in the world, Srikanth could not take advantage of the first game success and soon conceded defeat.
Jwala and Ashwini lost their second round match to the Chinese pair of Yu Yang and Zhong Qianxin. The final scoreline read 8-21 18-21 after 29 minutes of action. The men’s doubles pairing of Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar also crashed out in the second round of the tournament after being defeated 13-21 11-21 by China’s Chai Biao and Hong Wei.
