India had a good run on the second day at the Asian Athletics Championships in Wuhan. A total of four medals came India’s way today in Wuhan, China. After MR Poovamma added a silver to the medal tally in the morning, three others made it on the podium. Liksy Joseph led the Indian fray for medals on the second day.
Lakshmanan Wins First International Medal
Govindan Lakshmanan came third in the 5000 meters race. This was the first international medal for the army man, who also improved upon his personal best by 14 seconds. Lakshmanan clocked 13:36.62 for the third place. Qatar’s Mohamed Al-Garni bagged the gold in the event clocking 13:34.47.
Liksy Joseph Comes From Behind to Grab Silver
Liksy Joseph won the second silver medal for the country as she bounced back strongly in the heptathlon. Joseph long jumped a distance of 6.19 metres to propel herself to third place. Later, she finished strongly in the 800 metres clocking 2:13.44. This strong finish helped her garner 5,554 points – a personal best that ensured her of a silver medal.
The fourth medal for India on the day also came in the heptathlon. Purnima Hembram scored 5,511 points and won Bronze. Ekaterina Voronina of Uzbekistan won the gold, finishing with 5,689 points.
Today’s haul at the Asian Athletics Championship takes India’s total medals tally to four – one gold, two silver and a bronze.
