World no. 1 Novak Djokovic has been named in Serbia’s Davis Cup squad that will be playing against India in the world group playoff of the tennis mega event. After the US Open, he will be travelling to Bangalore, the scheduled venue for the matches. The KSLTA Tennis Stadium has been officially selected for the matches. The two-nation face off will consist of five matches(4 singles, 1 doubles), which will be played over a span of 3 days- 12th to 14th September to 2014. Let us take a quick look at both the teams; particularly India.
INDIA: India have put up tremendous performances in the Asia/Oceania group matches as they defeated Chinese Taipei 5-0 earlier this year in February. In April, India defeated South Korea on their home ground, 3-1 and qualified for the world group playoffs. They are up against a formidable Serbian squad and will need to find a way around Novak Djokovic to earn a place in the top 16 of the World Group. In this context it is good to see Somdev recover some form by reaching a Challenger final this week.
THE TEAM: Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Saketh Myneni, Rohan Bopanna. CAPTAIN: Anand Amritraj
Current WORLD RANK: 23 (1905 points) BEST DAVIS CUP PERFORMANCE: Runners-Up (1966, 1974, 1987)
SERBIA: Serbia began their 2014 Davis cup campaign with a 2-3 loss against Switzerland in the world group first round in February. Djokovic was unavailable for that match and the Swiss took advantage of it. Since he has returned to the squad, his presence will boost the morale of the team and they are sure to put up a tough fight against the Indians. the Serbians will be without their #2 player, Janko Tipsarevic who would have been a valuable support as he has played a lot in India. however they have a strong support line up with Nenad Zimonjic being a leading doubles player.
TEAM: Novak Djokovic, Dusan Lajovic, Filip Kranjovic, Nenad Zimonjic.
CAPTAIN: Bogdan Obradovic
CURRENT WORLD RANK: 2 (17900 POINTS) BEST DAVIS CUP PERFORMANCE: Winner (2010)
The schedule: The draw will be made on September 11, but mark your calendars for Friday September 12th, when world #1 and Wimbeldon champion, Novak Djokovic will make his debut on Indian soil.
