India no. 1 Dipika Pallikal bowed out of the prestigious Alexandria International Squash Open after a four-game battle in the second round. The 19th ranked Indian gave a tough fight to world no. 2 and local hope Raneem El Welily but ultimately went down 9-11, 11-9, 10-12, 3-11 in 41 minutes at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
Dipika Pallikal won only the second game
The Egyptian took a healthy lead of 8-2 in the first game before an aggressive Dipika Pallikal made a comeback. The Indian ace picked up six points in a row to even the score at 8-8. However, Raneem El Welily was too good in the end and closed it out at 11-9.
The second game was a mirror image of the first where once again, it was Raneem who inched ahead 5-1. A determined Dipika once more staged an impressive recovery to score seven consecutive points and ultimately took the second game 11-9.
Pallikal put up a tremendous performance in the third game. With excellent movement all over the court, she was always in the lead and even had a game ball at 10-9. However, buoyed by the crowd, the Egyptian player made her way back and scraped through to win the third game 12-10.
However, the Indian got tired from her efforts in the third game and could hardly provide any resistance in the fourth game. Raneem El Welily wrapped up the match 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-3.
