Indian doubles ace Rohan Bopanna and his Romanian partner Florin Mergea continued their good run on the ATP Tour as they reached the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle on Saturday. In a tight contest, Bopanna and Mergea edged past Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky 7-6(10), 4-6, 13-11.
Bopanna/Mergea put up an immaculate serving display, winning 91 per cent of first serve points. They also thundered down 11 aces in the 99-minute match. Despite not earning a single break point during the entire contest, the duo produced their best tennis on the major points to march into the final.
Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea had won Stuttgart last week
This confident form bodes well for the Indo-Romanian pair ahead of Wimbledon. Just last week, they had captured another grasscourt title at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, adding to their clay crown at Madrid.
They will now face Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram in the summit clash on Sunday.
Paes-Nestor in Queen’s semis
Meanwhile at the AEGON Championships being held in Queen’s Club, London, third seeds Leander Paes and Daniel Nestor have reached the semi-finals and will face the second-seeded pair of Nenad Zimonjic and Marcin Matkowski. The semi-final was supposed to be played on Saturday but due to rain it has now been postponed to Sunday.
The men’s doubles final is also scheduled on the same day.
