World No. 210 Saketh Myneni brought the smiles back to the Indian tennis contingent as he posted a 7-6(6), 6-4 victory over the 159th ranked German Peter Gojowczyk in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying on Monday.
Great start to Wimbledon Qualifying for Saketh
With a booming serve and big groundstrokes, Wimbledon was always supposed to be the most comfortable Slam for Saketh Myneni. The Asian Games gold medallist lived up to the expectations to register his first ever Grand Slam qualifying victory.
The opening set turned out to be a tight contest and Saketh only managed to eke it out 8-6 in the tie-break. With the first set in the pocket, the 27-year-old applied pressure on his higher-ranked opponent with some thunderous returns. He secured a break and then held on to complete the 7-6(6), 6-4 victory in 1 hour and 5 minutes.
In a late match on Monday, Somdev Devvarman will square off against Inigo Cervantes of Spain. Meanwhile, Divij Sharan and Purav Raja too will be in action in the doubles competition in Wimbledon qualifying along with their respective partners.
