Somdev Devvarman was left waiting to complete his Wimbledon qualifying first round match as rain and darkness forced many of the matches to be either suspended or altogether cancelled on Monday evening. Somdev was tied with the 144th ranked Spaniard Inigo Cervantes when the match was halted.
Good first set for Somdev in Wimbledon qualifying first round
The 172nd ranked Somdev began his Wimbledon qualifying match on a bright note. Breaking the Spaniard, he surged to a 3-1 lead and quickly raced to 5-2. However, the India No. 2 faced some difficulties in closing out the set and allowed Cervantes to come back. Somdev finally managed to swing the first set in his favour as he broke his opponent in the 12th game to take the set 7-5.
Inigo Cervantes, however took a firm control of the second set as soon as it began. Breaking Somdev early, he opened a 2-0 lead. Somdev faced another break point while serving at 1-3 down but he managed to hold his serve. The rest of the games went according to serve as Cervantes grabbed the second set 6-4.
The match will resume on Tuesday. Because of the late start due to rain, Divij Sharan and Purav Raja’s respective doubles matches got cancelled and their matches are now scheduled for Tuesday as well.
