Indian doubles players provided the spark after Somdev Devvarman’s disappointing exit in singles on Day 2 of the Wimbledon qualifying held at Roehampton. Somdev came back on Tuesday to complete his rain-suspended first round match against Spaniard Inigo Cervantes. However, the Indian No. 2 could not do much and succumbed to a 7-5, 4-6, 2-6 defeat to the World No. 144 in 1 hour 53 minutes.
Sharan, Raja start with wins at Wimbledon qualifying
It was left to the doubles exponents – Divij Sharan and Purav Raja to bring some cheer back to the Indian camp and they duly delivered.
Eighth seeds Purav Raja and his French partner Fabrice Martin put up an impeccable display to register a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the French-Italian combine of Stephane Robert and Alessandro Motti in 53 minutes.
Divij Sharan and his Mexican teammate Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela too produced a stellar performance to enter the second round of the doubles competition at the Wimbledon qualifying. The unseeded pair won 6-4, 6-4 over the German-Swedish duo of Martin Emmrich and Andreas Siljestrom in 1 hour 2 minutes.
Unfortunately, Sharan/Reyes-Varela and Raja/Martin will now face each other in the second round.
Coming up on Wednesday:
The two doubles pairs will fight it out in the second round while the lone Indian left in the singles draw – Saketh Myneni will battle against Frenchman Kenny de Schepper.
