Day 3 of Wimbledon qualifying saw a heartbreaking loss for Saketh Myneni in the second round of men’s singles while Purav Raja and Fabrice Martin overcame Divij Sharan and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela to enter the main draw in men’s doubles.
Saketh Myneni goes down fighting in Wimbledon qualifying
World No. 210 Saketh Myneni put up a gutsy fight against an opponent ranked 47 places higher than him – Kenny de Schepper of France. But the Asian Games gold medallist, unfortunately, had to end up on the losing side.
The experienced Frenchman edged ahead in the first set tie-break 7-6(5). The big-serving Saketh came back in the second set to take it 6-3. The deciding set was a close affair where Kenny de Schepper broke Indian hearts by grabbing the 7-6(5), 3-6, 9-7 win in 2 hours 12 minutes.
Purav Raja beats Divij Sharan
In a men’s doubles second round battle between former doubles partners, it was Purav Raja who emerged victorious over Divij Sharan. Eighth seeds Raja and Frenchman Fabrice Martin lost the first set 3-6 as Divij Sharan and his Mexican teammate Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela started off brilliantly.
But the Indo-French pair bounced back to take the next two sets and win the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour 40 minutes.
This is the third consecutive time that Purav Raja has qualified for the main draw in men’s doubles at this Slam.
