The grass turfs of Wimbledon are all set to host another Grand Slam. There is some rich history when it comes to the competition and Indian tennis players have had their share in the same.
Over the years, Wimbledon has witnessed some memorable Indian performances. This year also, the Indian players will come into the tournament with a lot of expectations on their shoulders. Before the latest edition kicks off, we take a look back at the top five Indian performances at Wimbledon.
# 1 The Golden Pairing Strikes in 1999
The golden pairing of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi had a memorable year in 1999. They reached the finals of all the grand slam championships that year and went on to win two Grand Slam titles including Wimbledon. The duo defeated the pairing of Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer in the final of the competition to get the first Wimbledon title for India. The same year, Paes won the mixed doubles title as well with Lisa Raymond.
#2 Bhupathi triumphs in 2002
Three years after the triumph in doubles, Mahesh Bhupathi was once again crowned a champion at Wimbledon. This time however, it came in the mixed doubles category. He paired up with Russian Elena Likhovtseva to clinch the Mixed Doubles championship. Bhupathi would win the mixed doubles in 2005 as well but first time is always special.
#3 Paes Triumphs in 2003
Bhupathi’s win in the 2002 Championship gave inspiration to Paes in 2003. He won the mixed doubles title alongside the legendary Martina Navrátilová. It was the team’s second grand slam championship after winning Australian Open earlier that year. They defeated Anastassia Rodionova and Andy Ram in the final.
#4 Sania Mirza attracts attention (2003)
When Paes was celebrating his mixed doubles championship on one side, India saw the rise of a new tennis sensation on the other. It was none other than Sania Mirza. In 2003, Sania was crowned the doubles champion in junior Wimbledon Championship alongside Alisa Kleybanova.
#5 Most recent success story (2010)
The most recent success story from the tournament happened in 2010. Once again it came courtesy of Leander Paes. He paired up with Zimbabwe’s Cara Black in the 2010 tournament and went on to clinch the mixed doubles championship. They defeated the team of Wesley Moodie and Lisa Raymond, who was the partner of Paes back in 1999.
