There were high expectations from Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist Rajiv Tomar(125 kg freestyle) since the top Indian wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt had opted to rest ahead of the Asian games. But Tomar couldn’t live up to the expectations and was eliminated in the first round itself. He lost to Ryong Sung (Korea)
Another Indian, Arun(70 kg freestyle) also lost his first bout to Cleopas Ncube (Canada) 4-0.
In the 57 KG freestyle, Rahul Balasaheb Aware defeated Peker Ahmet of Turkey . He faced Bekhbayar Erdenebat of Mongolia in the next round and lost the match.
Naresh Kumar, who was playing in the 86 kg freestyle category won his first bout against Quintino Intipe of Guinea Bissau. He was beaten by Cuban wrestler Reineris Salas in the next round 3-1.
India had sent a second string squad as the tournament was considered too close to the Asian Games but had to finish with 3 first round wins across 8 Men’s events. Hopefully this exposure to World class wrestling will hold them in good stead.
One looks forward to a medal finish at the Asian games in Incheon when the top Indian wrestlers get on the mat.
