Harbhajan Singh turns 35 today. The iconic off-spinner has more to celebrate this time than just his birthday with a call-up for the Indian squad for the Zimbabwe series.
Harbhajan Singh is rated as one of the finest off spinners of all time, famous for his “doosra”. He also holds the distinction of being the first Indian to pick a Test match hat-trick; that too against an invincible Australian side led by Steve Waugh in 2001. The turbanator received his first One-day call-up in four years just a few days before his 35th Birthday.
Golden opportunity for Harbhajan Singh
This is a one-off opportunity that Harbhajan Singh has received over his fellow stalwarts Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh whose careers don’t seem to take any such turns.
Bhajji’s last ODI outing in national colours was against the West Indies on June 11, 2011. The off-spinner, however had a good run with the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2015 and followed it up with a decent show against Bangladesh in the Fatullah Test picking three wickets. The wicket of Imrul Kayes was one of the highlights of his career as he entered the list of top 10 wicket takers of all time in Test cricket. He replaced former Pakistani speedster Wasim Akram at the no. 10 spot.
Harbhajan Singh’s persistence and determination over the last couple of years has been truly admirable and this might be his final call-up to the Indian side. And Bhajji will aim to make the most out of this opportunity.
Apart from his role as one of the members of the squad, Harbhajan Singh is also expected to mentor the younger players in the team as he is the most capped player in the Indian squad that will face Zimbabwe.
Sports Rediscovered wishes Harbhajan Singh a very happy birthday and all the best for another new spell in his career.
