It’s July and the monsoon will be at its peak soon. Long distance runners and marathoners, get ready as there are some noted Indian marathons in July coming your way. Sports Rediscovered takes a close look at marathons making news this month as a part of its’ coverage of the Indian marathon circuit.
Indian marathons in July:
The Thane 10K Run 2015- Mumbai
Organized by Thane District Athletic Association and promoted by Rhythmic Running, this road race was held on Sunday. The race being a qualifier for the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2016, had most of the participants running with the objective of qualifying for the SCMM 2016. All finishers were awarded with medals and timing certificates. Although this race was a local event, it witnessed outstation runners from cities and towns near to Mumbai and also far off cities like Kolkata and Bangalore.
The Cherrapunjee Marathon –Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya
Claimed by the organizers to be the first timed marathon in Northeast India, the second edition of this marathon will be held on 17th July, 2015. The categories in the marathon include Elite Indian Professional Race (full marathon of 42.2km and half marathon of 21.1km), Amateur Race (full marathon of 42.2km and half marathon of 21.1km), Kid’s Fun Run of 2km and an Inclusive Run, open to all including persons with different abilities. The picturesque landscapes along the Shillong-Cherranpunjee route, makes it one of the most scenic Indian marathons. Along with the local runners, national elite marathoners and running enthusiasts from across the country will be participating in this event.
Dream Runner’s Half Marathon – Chennai
Scheduled to be held on 26th July 2015, this marathon has two categories, Half Marathon (21.1K) and 10K Run. The 4th edition of one of the most popular Indian marathons will have local as well as outstation runners from nearby cities, participating. The event is based on the theme “Let’s RUN so they can WALK”. The funds raised from the marathon will be donated to the Freedom Trust (Foundation for the Rehabilitation, Education and Empowerment of the disabled of Madras) that provides prosthetic legs to the needy. This is a timed marathon where runners will run with timing chips. Pacers will be available to assist runners reach their goals. All finishers will receive medals and timing certificates.
Kathgodam Half Marathon – Kathgodam, Uttarakhand
“The Gateway of Kumaon Hills” joins the marathon circuit in India, with the first Kathgodam Half Marathon. This marathon will be held on 26th July 2015 and has two categories – 21K Half Marathon, a timed race, where the timings of all the runners will be recorded manually and a 5K Fun Run, a non-competitive non-timed run. This marathon is expected to have local runners and outstation runners mostly from Delhi, participating.
