ISL Auction: Chhetri valued at Rs. 1.20 Crore

The ISL Auction witnessed a mammoth amount above Rs. 7 crore being spent on 10 valuable Indian national team players. It was quite obvious that the top earner had to be the Indian captain Sunil Chhetri, as he bagged a whopping offer of Rs. 1.20 crore from Mumbai City FC.

ISL Auctions

The ISL Players Auction at Mumbai were the first of the kind witnessed in Indian football with 10 players going under the hammer this season. The eight franchises battled to their limits to gain services of the top Indian players. In this auction, the Indian captain Sunil Chhetri was the star attraction and there was an attempt(bid) by almost all the clubs to secure his services. But, it was Mumbai FC who went for the highest bid for Chhetri, thereby landing him in the squad.

It was quite surprising to see players like Eugeneson Lyngdoh (signed by FC Pune for Rs. 1.05 crore) and Rino Anto (signed by Athletico de Kolkata for Rs. 90 Lakhs) around the Rs. 1 crore mark rising from their base values of Rs. 27.5 Lakhs and 17.5 Lakhs respectively at the ISL auction. It brings up a question, did the organizers undervalue these players so much or was it the pure need of the franchises to land the players in order to strengthen their squad and the corresponding bidding war for these players.

FC Pune also acquired the services of the I-League player of the season Jackichand Singh, the I-League player of the league in this year.

Delhi Dynamos went for a “Shubh Labh” with their purchases in the auction, as according to Indian traditions offering a sum of money ending with the digit “one” is considered auspicious. Hence they possibly purchased Anas Edathodika for Rs. 41 Lakhs and Robin Singh for Rs. 51 Lakhs.

The other key players that were signed in the first round of the auction include: Thoi Singh and Karanjit Singh signed by Chennaiyin FC, Arata Izumi signed by Athletico de Kolkata and Seityasen Singh signed by North East United.
