Kenneth Mungara wins the 37th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon at 41 !
Kenyan athlete and long distance runner Kenneth Mungara won the 37th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon on Sunday, 5th July 2015 in 2:08:42. Gold Coast Airport Marathon is one of the most popular marathons in Australia and one of the only two marathons holding an IAAF Gold Label Road Race status (the other being Sydney marathon).
The event witnessed a participation of 27500 runners from Australia and other parts of the world this year. Mungara bettered his own Master40+ world record by two seconds, which he set by winning the SuisseGas Milano Marathon earlier this year and broke the course record of 2:09:14 set by another Kenyan runner Silah Limo last year, who came second this year with a personal best timing of 2:08:54. They were joined on the podium by fellow Kenyan, Evans Ruto, who also ran under the previous race record in 2:08:55.
While the Kenyan runners were podium finishers in the men’s section, the Japanese runners, Risa Takenaka (2:28:25), Keiko Nogami (2:29:34) and Manami Kamitanida (2:33:43) were the first three to cross the line in the women’s event.
Berlin Marathon confirms Top Kenyan athletes
The organizers of Berlin Marathon have confirmed the participation of Eliud Kipchoge, who won medals in Olympic and World level. The organizers also confirmed the participation of Emmanuel Mutai, who is the third fastest marathoner runner of all-time and Geoffrey Mutai, winner of Boston Marathon in 2011 in 2:03:02, second fastest run in the world, even though the course was not eligible for records by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
All three Kenyan runners have experience with the Berlin course and all have stood on the podium. Started in the year 1974, Berlin Marathon is one of the most popular marathons in the world and is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. The 42nd edition of this marathon will be held on 27th September 2015 and will attract running enthusiasts from all over the world.
Indian Marathon – Updates
Runners run the Thane 10K Run to qualify in SCMM 2016
Organized by Thane District Athletic Association and promoted by Rhythmic Running, this road race was held on 5th July 2015 at Hiranandani Estate Thane. The race being a qualifier for Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM), had participants running with an objective to qualify for the SCMM 2016. All finishers were awarded with medals and timing certificates. The race witnessed participation of local runners from Mumbai, Thane and also outstation runners from far off cities like Kolkata and Bangalore.
Goa River Marathon opens registration
The Goa River Marathon opens registration for its’ 6th edition to be held on 13th December 2015. The event has four categories, full marathon, half marathon, 10K and a Fun-Walk Run. Growing in popularity every year, this marathon attracts a lot of outstation participants from across the country. Pacers will be available to help runners reach their timing goals. The last date of registration is 10th December 2015. All finishers will be awarded with medals and timing certificates.
Yeour Hill Run Challenge postponed to 30th August 2015
The 2nd edition of the Yeour Hill Run Challenge, has been postponed by a week to 30th August 2015. The event has become popular amongst running enthusiasts in Thane and Mumbai due to its unique hill running experience in the greenery of Yeour Hill Thane. This marathon has four categories, 15K Hill Run run, 10K Obstacle Race, 6K Green Run and a 3K Senior Citizen & Kids Run. This event does not provide participants with Timing Chip. With Hyderabad Marathon happening on the same date, runners who have registered for both the events will have to give one a miss!
