As this post season has shown, “Manchester United can do what other clubs can only dream of “. With the signings of Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin the Red Devils, are taking shape for the forthcoming English Premier League and Champions League seasons.
When Louis van Gaal was appointed United’s manager last season, he had a mammoth task of ensuring qualification of the team for the Champions League. The Red Devils showed tremendous consistency in the second half of the season to seal the berth, despite performing below standards in the initial part of their campaign.
Midfield taking shape with plenty of options:
The Red Devils will enjoy a coup of central midfielders in the forthcoming season, including Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera. Then they also have an option of playing Daley Blind in the central midfield, but with so many resources available van Gaal would likely play him in a deeper role.
However, it would be interesting to see how much van Gaal would use the pairing of Schweinsteiger-Carrick in the central role. But, the good thing for United’s manager is the options, seeing the injury record of both Carrick and Schweinsteiger, as they both struggled with niggles in their respective campaigns, last season.
To add to their problem of plenty, Herrera-Fellaini pair combined pretty well last season. But, the bottom line is they have quality options now in the midfield, with Juan Mata and Angel di Maria also available, atleast as we speak, along with Schneiderlin (who joined from Southampton) and Ashley Young.
Manchester United far from over this transfer window:
Despite making some very good signings, Ed Woodward will not be content, seeing United still have some holes to fills, in defence especially. The void left by the departure of Nemaja Vedic and Rio Ferdinand in the central roles is yet to be filled and Man United would be targeting some big names in the days to come.
Nicolas Otamendi is on United’s radar for quite some time now and he can slot in quite nicely into the team. There are rumours of Jonny Evans leaving this summer, and if it happens United would want to have Otamendi in the side sooner than later.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani is also on Woodward’s target to join United’s forward line. It is no secret that Cavani is not happy at PSG, as he is not playing on his favourite position, and asked to play on wings. So, the South American could be given an assurance of playing on his favourite position with a hefty package.
It would be interesting to see Manchester United taking field in the upcoming season, and with their US Tour approaching we might get a glimpse of how the Red Devils would shape as a potent unit in English Premier League season.
