Wrestling Federation of India’s selection committee has announced an eight-member women’s team to represent the country at the 2015 World Wrestling Championships to be held in Las Vegas, from 7th to 12th September. Trials to select the team were conducted at the Sports Authority of India Center in Lucknow on the 6th of July.
The selection committee headed by WFI President and Member of Parliament Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh did the selection based on the wrestlers’ performances during the trials. The WFI President said–
“Our women wrestlers have been working very hard on various aspects of the game at the national camp which is already underway at SAI Centre in Lucknow since November 2014. The International wrestling tournament in Kazakhstan will be an ideal opportunity for our Indian Women team to get international exposure before going into the World Championship”.
Phogat sisters make the cut
2012 World Championship Bronze medalist and Olympian Geeta Phogat was selected for the 58 kg category. Her cousin, Commonwealth Games 2014 Gold Medalist, Vinesh has been selected for the 48 kg weight category. The third candidate is 2014 Commonwealth Games Silver medalist, Lalita Sehrawat who was selected for the 55 kg category.
Nirmala Devi has been selected for the Kazakhstan Tournament in the 53 kg category. However, Nirmala will have to face Commonwealth Games medalist Babita Kumari to finalize India’s representative in 53kg category for the World Wrestling Championships.
Babita had already submitted a request, mentioning her inability to compete in the trials due to injury, while requesting that her past performance be taken into account. Hence the selection committee agreed to hold trials for Babita at a later date.
