The Indian contingent at the 2014 Asian games will be in a great mood as the women’s football team announced their arrival in style by outplaying Maldives in their first group stage game 15-0 in a goal fest.
5 Goals Each for Sadmita and Kamala
Winger Sasmita Malik and Midfielder Kamala Devi were the top goalscorers as they netted five goals each. Bala Devi Ngangom, Ashalata Devi, skipper Bembem Devi and Parmeshwori Devi were among the others who scored goals. Bembem was involved in almost all the goals.
The scorekeepers were put to work right from the 5th minute when Sasmita Malik began the proceedings for the Indians. Kamala followed up with another goal in the 17th minute. The talented striker Bala scored the third goal for India in the very next minute. 4 more goals were scored in the next 12 minutes, in which Malik and Kamala both completed their hat-tricks and Bala scored her second. By half time, the score read 9-0.
Defender Ashalata Devi and Bembem also joined the goalscorers list as the second half progressed. The Maldives’ women looked out of their depth unlike their male counterparts who have defeated India recently. During the second half half, Kamala scored another goal in the 66th minute and the score read 13-0 by then. The best goal of the match came in the 80th minute when Sasmita scored off a free-kick from 25 yards. She summed it up with another goal in the 87th minute. Parmeshwori Devi struck the final nail in the coffin as she scored the 15th goal in stoppage time.
The Indian Women play their next match against hosts South Korea on 17th September and the final group stage match against Thailand on the 19th.
