HS Prannoy of Kerala turned last week’s disappointment into success as he clinched his maiden title, the Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold on Sunday. The 22-year-old rising shuttler took just 43 minutes to dismiss qualifier Firman Abdul Kholik 21-11, 22-20 in the final at Palembang.
Prannoy began the match very well as he raced out to a 6-2 lead and clinched the first game easily. The second game was more competitive as Firman prevented Prannoy from playing his attacking game. The Indonesian surged ahead before Prannoy levelled the game. But the inspired Firman kept fighting and equalled the score at 20-20 before Prannoy slammed the door on his opponent.
The young shuttler dedicated the title to coach Pullela Gopichand who praised Prannoy for his efforts. “I think it is really wonderful. He not only played well in Vietnam to reach the final, but winning in Indonesian Masters is really incredible,’’ said Gopichand. Notably, Prannoy had earlier won a silver medal in the boys’ singles category at the 2010 Youth Olympics.
Here’s wishing Prannoy all the luck for his bright future ahead!
